TRY THESE 5 ARTY TECHNIQUES FOR ADDING WRITING TO YOUR CREATIVE JOURNAL

HATE YOUR HANDWRITING? HERE’S 5 EASY AND ARTY WAYS TO ADD WORDS TO YOUR ART JOURNAL PAGES THAT DON’T USE A PEN

SCRATCHING THROUGH THE LAYERS

This is one of my favourites and nearly every journal page I have ever created will have this type of writing within its layers. It is so simply to do and looks really effective - you can get really creative and play around with different colour combinations too. All you need to do is layer paint and ‘write’ into it while the top layer is still wet.

BORROWED WORDS

I’m not sure if there is a name for this technique but its simply using words that have been printed elsewhere - magazines etc (**must have been printed using laser printer otherwise it won’t work) and using sticky tape and water to remove the paper while keeping the printed letters - genius! What I love about this is that the work underneath shows through and the words look as though they have been printed directly on the page.

COLLAGE LETTERS

Collage is a pretty simple way to add lettering and words to your journals, but I challenge you to go beyond the magazines and look for interesting lettering in old books, or on envelopes - open your eyes and be on the hunt for words and letters everywhere! Another idea is to print out your own letters or words to use. I also love to cut out the letters individually rather than just stick down a whole word, I find this add another layer of interest and makes it more ‘mine’.

HIDDEN WORDS

For when you just want a hint of writing on the page: simply write in any medium you choose and then using an old credit card or piece of heavy duty cardboard scrap a layer of paint of the top, keep scraping until you have just the right amount of writing showing though.

OIL/WAX RESIST WRITING

Write using oil pastel or wax crayon and then simply apply a wash of paint over the top. You can use this as a background to continue working on or leave as it is.

or just get comfortable with your messy handwriting

Sometimes the messy, scrawly handwriting isn’t as ugly as we think it is.
